weighed, the warships cruising at high speed in the vicinity, the other ships clearing to the Southward. This caused some little excitement on board, all WT doors were at once closed and guns on the UD loaded & brought to the ready. At 12.30 the sub was again sighted this time by a trawler and the Destroyer “Chelmer”. At 1.20 “Vengeance” was ordered to Mudros to coal ammunition, provision, and await orders. We accordingly left the vicinity of Gaba Tepe and arrived at Mudros at 7.30 pm.
May 22nd cont – distance from Gaba Tepe to Mudros 63 miles
Distance steamed since leaving Sheerness 18,345 miles
May 23rd – Coal received today 450 tons
Coal received since mobilizing 19,658 tons
At Mudros. At 6.30 am the S.S. “Darnholme” secured alongside. Coaling commenced at 8 o/c am and was finished by 11 o/c am. At noon the S.S. “Swansea Vale” secured alongside with 6” shrapnel. After the ammunition was on board, the 6” gun disabled on April 25th was transferred to “Swansea Vale” after which she cast off. The SS “Dago” next secured alongside with fresh provisions. After the “Dago”, the SS Trostan came alongside with more ammunition and all our empty cartridge cases etc was put on board her. At 5.30 she cast off after which hands were allowed to bathe.
May 24th – At Mudros. At 8 o/c am the S.S. “Fauvette” secured alongside with the 6” gun to replace the disabled one and the opportunity was taken to shift the gun from BI casemate to YIII, it having become much worn by such heavy firing.
