The Peace Front in England seems in a regular muddle. Oswald Mosley’s secretary got up a peace statement signed by a queer collection: soon afterwards, Maude Royden and Ruth Fry disassociated themselves from it. The Peace Pledge Union takes the view that because Russia is in half of Poland, Russia must be fought if Poland to be set up again. And if war goes on, it will be between National Socialism in Russia and Germany versus the Imperialist Powers. They say, “Tell the Government you want the war stopped”....
Smart London restaurants are full to overflowing: guards officers and “smart set” dancing and eating as usual. The more careful rich have shut London houses and are in the country. London shops doing trade by post with them and shutting early in town. Poorish people like Priscilla hang on in London until (if and when) raids start.
