September 14th 1914 Monday
I was told that I might have to be sent to Döberitz as a prisoner of war. It might be rather amusing—an experience at any rate—though not for long.
Charlotte is thinking of leaving for America very soon. How I just love her—her beautiful golden hair—her beautiful large brown eyes—make me think of the Egyptian prayer:— “Only God and I know what it is in my heart.” It will be perfectly “Hell”!!! without her here—I don’t even know how I have stuck it up to now.
September 15th 1914 Tuesday
Went to the American Embassy to find out whether there was any truth in the report that all Englishmen would be sent to Döberitz. Was told that it was certain.
I then went to the Commandant to find out. The Adjutant
