Thomas seems to be a wide-awake sort of person, but I noticed his uneasiness when I referred to the safety of British Subjects in Germany if that country was in a State of War. He told me that as far as England was concerned, her position would certainly be neutral, but that if my friend, Miss Ireland were in the least way nervous, it would be better for her to leave the country. He did not exactly advise me to leave Germany, but certainly suggested it. He was nervous all through the interview.
To say the truth, I confess that I now thought things were serious enough for me to leave Germany also, but when I reached home, Commander Hering told me that he and in fact Germany was relying on England’s neutrality.
