Half-an-hour before the train left, Kathleen volunteered to go—much against her will—she had hitherto shown no signs of patriotism—in fact the very opposite, but it was a great piece of self-sacrifice on her part, when she packed her trunk and left.
Commander H was very upset, as he has quite lost his heart to her—he thought it ridiculous for English people to leave Berlin.
H was charming and we both saw the girls off at 11:0 p.m.
It was a trying day for all of us, and I was very pleased to pop into bed.
I thought of darling little C, and hoped for England’s sake, the world’s sake, that England’s policy would be neutral.
