August 5th 1914 Wednesday
12:0 Wrote a letter to C. She was quite pleased with it but would write no answer.
I went out for a walk in the town. People were very excited about the state of affairs in Europe, and all were hoping that England would remain neutral. Flags were hanging out of all the windows—mostly German, Bavarian and Austrian. I went for a walk with C. to the Stadtpark in the evening and then played the piano to her. She has a charming voice, and I love to hear her singing those dear little Southern songs from Texas.
Dearest C., how I just adore her—her very name is sweeter than the sweetest of music—her hair is more golden and more valuable in price than all Solomon’s richest glories.
